THIS IS NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK.   THE WINDOM VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL BE HOLDING SCHOOL TOURS THIS WEEK.  PRE-SCHOOL AND ELEMENTARY STUDENTS WILL BE VISITING THE NEW EMERGENCY SERVICES FACILITY.  THEY WILL VIEW THE EQUIPMENT, AND LEARN MORE ABOUT FIRE SAFETY AND PREVENTION.  ON WEDNESDAY, A CITY-WIDE FIRE DRILL WIL BE HELD AT 6:30.  FAMILIES ARE ENCOURAGED TO PRACTICE THEIR PERSONAL ESCAPE PLAN.  THE THEME FOR THE DRILL IS “EVERY SECOND COUNTS – PLAN TWO WAYS OUT.” 
THE WINDOM CITY PLANNING COMMISSION MEETS THIS EVENING.    THE COMMISSION WILL DISCUSS THE PROPOSED RENTAL HOUSING ORDINANCE.  SOME REVISIONS WILL BE CONSIDERED, BASED ON FEEDBACK FROM LAST WEEK’S PUBLIC HEARING.  UNDER OLD BUSINESS, THERE WILL BE AN UPDATE ON A CONDITIONAL USE PERMIT THAT WAS ISSUED TO ADD FILL AT THE SITE OF THE HOTEL PROJECT.  THERE WILL ALSO BE AN UPDATE ON THE CREATION OF A NEW “TIF” DISTRICT FOR THE HOTEL SITE.
THE WINDOM CITY PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION WILL MEET TODAY.   THE PARK SUPERINTENDENT WILL HAVE A YEAR-END REPORT ON CITY PARKS.  THERE WILL BE AN UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO FIND A NEW LOCATION FOR THE TENNIS COURTS.  THE REC DIRECTOR WILL HAVE AN UPDATE ON THE FRIENDS OF THE POOL GROUP.  THE PARK AND REC COMMISSION WILL ALSO DISCUSS THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ICE-MAKING EQUIPMENT AT THE CITY ARENA.  THEY WILL CONSIDER HIRING AN ENGINEERING FIRM TO BEGIN DESIGN WORK FOR THE PROJECT.
THIS IS HOMECOMING WEEK AT WINDOM AREA HIGH SCHOOL.   THE THEME IS “SURF’S UP.”  THERE WILL BE DAILY DRESS-UP THEMES; TODAY IS HAWAIIAN DAY.  WINDOM HAS A HOME VOLLEYBALL MATCH TONIGHT.  ON WEDNESDAY, THERE WILL BE A BONFIRE AND FLOAT DECORATING AT ISLAND PARK.  CORONATION WILL BE HELD THURSDAY EVENING IN THE OLD GYM.  A HOMECOMING PARADE WILL BE HELD FRIDAY MORNING, FOLLOWED BY ACTIVITIES AND A PEP FEST.  THE WINDOM FOOTBALL TEAM PLAYS REDWOOD VALLEY FRIDAY NIGHT. 
ANOTHER MEETING IS BEING HELD TO DISCUSS THE “GROW OUR OWN” INITIATIVE IN WINDOM.   THE WINDOM E-D-A IS WORKING WITH THE SOUTHWEST INITIATIVE FOUNDATION ON THE EFFORT.  “GROW OUR OWN” FOCUSES ON ISSUES OF YOUTH POVERTY AND OPPORTUNITY.  THE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT 4:30 WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON AT THE WINDOM COMMUNITY CENTER.  PARTICIPANTS WILL SET PRIORITIES, AND CONSIDER STEPS THAT CAN BE TAKEN TO CLOSE THE OPPORTUNITY GAP.  ONE IN SIX CHILDREN IN SW MN IS REPORTEDLY LIVING IN POVERTY. 
THE MT LAKE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT WILL HOLD A SPECIAL EVENT THIS WEEK.  THE “FAMILY FUN FAIR” WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY FROM 5:00 TO 6:30 AT THE MT LAKE FIRE HALL.  THIS IS FOR FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN UP TO 12-YEARS-OLD.  ALL CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ADULT.  A FREE LIGHT MEAL WILL BE SERVED.  CHILDREN WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THE FIRE TRUCKS AND EQUIPMENT.  LOCAL GROUPS AND ORGANIZATIONS WILL HAVE INFORMATIONAL BOOTHS.  EVERY CHILD WILL RECEIVE A FREE BOOK ON FIRE SAFETY.
