VOLUNTEERS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP PEOPLE WITH THE MEDICARE OPEN-ENROLLMENT PERIOD.     THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING WILL ASSIST BENEFICIARIES WITH RESEARCHING AND ENROLLING IN MEDICARE PLANS FOR 2018.  VOLUNTEERS WILL BE AVAILABLE BY APPOINTMENT AT THE JACKSON PUBLIC LIBRARY THIS THURSDAY.  TO SCHEDULE AN APPOINTMENT, CALL THE SENIOR LINKAGE LINE AT 1-800-333-2433. 
MORE AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVES ARE BEING HELD IN THE AREA.     ON THURSDAY, THERE WILL BE A BLOOD DRIVE AT THE AMERICAN LEGION HALL IN LAMBERTON.  THE HOURS WILL BE FROM 1:00 UNTIL 7:00.  ALL BLOOD TYPES ARE NEEDED.  TO DONATE BLOOD, YOU SHOULD WEIGH AT LEAST 110 POUNDS AND BE IN GOOD GENERAL HEALTH.  YOU WILL NEED TO SHOW IDENTIFICATION AT CHECK-IN. 
A MEETING OF THE WINDOM CITY COUNCIL WAS HELD THIS WEEK.    THE COUNCIL VOTED TO HIRE AN ENGINEERING FIRM TO BEGIN DESIGN WORK ON PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS TO THE ICE-MAKING SYSTEM AT THE CITY ARENA.  A REPORT WAS PRESENTED ON THE PROPOSED RE-FINANCING OF A 2009 BOND ISSUE, IN ORDER TO SAVE MONEY THROUGH LOWER INTEREST RATES.  THE COUNCIL APPROVED AN AMENDMENT TO THE WINDOM AREA HOSPITAL BY-LAWS.  A PUBLIC HEARING WAS SCHEDULED ON ASSESSMENTS FOR THE 2017 STREET PROJECT. 
THE MT LAKE SCHOOL BOARD HELD A REGULAR MEETING THIS WEEK.   THE BOARD ESTABLISHED AN ABSENTEE BALLOT BOARD FOR THE SCHOOL BOARD ELECTION BEING HELD ON NOVEMBER 7TH.  A SPECIAL BOARD MEETING WAS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 13TH TO CANVASS ELECTION RETURNS.  THE BOARD APPROVED A VOLUNTEER DRIVER.  SEVERAL REPORTS WERE PRESENTED, INCLUDING A REPORT FROM THE BUILDING COMMITTEE.  THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT DISCUSS OPTIONS FOR A FUTURE TRIP. 
A JUNIOR-HIGH KNOWLEDGE BOWL MEET WAS HELD MONDAY IN MT LAKE.   THERE WERE 14 TEAMS FROM 7 AREA SCHOOLS.  THE MT LAKE “EMERALD” TEAM WON THE MEET, WITH JACKSON COUNTY CENTRAL 2ND, MT LAKE CHRISTIAN 3RD, CEDAR MT 4TH AND A TEAM FROM WINDOM IN 5TH PLACE.  WINDOM’S OTHER TEAMS FINISHED IN 9TH, 11TH AND 13TH PLACE.  THE MT LAKE “JADE” TEAM FINISHED IN 7TH PLACE.  THE NEXT JUNIOR-HIGH KNOWLEDGE BOWL MEET WILL BE HELD MONDAY IN SLAYTON. 
A CONCERT – FEATURING THE WORK OF A NORWEGIAN COMPOSER – WILL BE HELD IN WINDOM THIS WEEKEND.  THE SONS OF NORWAY STAVANGER LODGE IS SPONSORING THE PROGRAM ON SUNDAY AT 2:00 AT THE AMERICAN LUTHERAN CHURCH IN WINDOM.  THE EVENT IS FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.  DR. MICHAEL JORGENSON OF GUSTAVUS COLLEGE, AND HIS WIFE BONNIE, WILL BE PERFORMING WORKS COMPOSED BY THEODORA CORMONTON.  CORMONTON WAS A NORWEGIAN IMMIGRANT WHO LIVED IN SW MINNESOTA.
